Point of Clarification

This is a list of actual or suspected tab errors and rounds with ambiguous results.

Confirmed errors/ambiguous results

MLK @ James Logan 2008-2009, Round 3, James Logan CM (Erik Camacho & Kyle Most) v Lynbrook RS (Artem Raskin & Carl Shan)
Tab results: James Logan CM (Opp) def. Lynbrook RS (Gov)
Actual Results: Lynbrook RS (Opp) def. James Logan CM (Gov)
Cause: judge confused which team was which side on the ballot
Impact: James Logan CM was 3-2 instead of 2-3. Lynbrook RS was 3-2 instead of 4-1 and had to hit their teammates in doubles.

MLK @ James Logan 2008-2009, Round4, Saratoga JA (Rishabh Jethanandani & Karthik Annamalai) v Lynbrook BM (Indranil Bora & Aditya Majumdar)
Tab results: Aditya Majumdar (Lynbrook BM) was recorded to have received 28 speaker points.
Actual Results: The ballot states 29 speaker points for Aditya Majumdar.
Impact: Aditya was originally tied for 6th speaker. He would have been 5th speaker (and received an award) if given the correct speaker points.

Stanford Invitational, 2008-2009, Round 3, Head Royce WG (Leslie Wu & Selam Gebregziabher) v Lynbrook BM (Indranil Bora & Aditya Majumdar)
Tab results: Aditya Majumdar (Lynbrook BM) was recorded to have received 27 speaker points.
Indranil Bora (Lynbrook BM) was recorded to have received 29 speaker points.
Leslie Wu (Head Royce WG) was recorded to have received 27 speaker points.
Selam Gebreziabher (Head Royce WG) was recorded to have received 28 speaker points.
Actual Results: The ballot states 29 speaker points for Aditya Majumdar.
The ballot states 28 speaker points for Indranil Bora.
Selam and Leslie’s point values were switched. Selam should have received 27, Leslie – 28.
Impact: Aditya Majumdar was originally 26th speaker. If given the correct speaker points, he would have been 14th speaker (and received an award).

CFL State Qualifier 2008-2009, run-off round, Bellarmine PL (Anthony Paranzino & Evan Larson) v Lynbrook MB (Aditya Majumdar & Indranil Bora)
Tab results: Bellarmine PL def. Lynbrook MB [4-1]
Actual results: Bellarmine PL def. Lynbrook MB [3-2]

Santa Clara Spring 2008-2009, Round 1, Lynbrook BM (Indranil Bora & Aditya Majumdar) v. Irvington AK (Devika Agarwal & Hungjun Kim)
Tab Results: Aditya Majumdar 28 points, Indranil Bora 29 points
Actual Results: Aditya Majumdar 29 points, Indranil Bora 28 points
Cause: judge confused speaking order
Impact: Aditya Majumdar had got 56 points instead of 57, becoming 5th speaker instead of 2nd (as per rounds 1-4). Indranil Bora got 54 points instead of 53.

Santa Clara Spring 2008-2009, Round 1
Leland was late for registration, so Leland teams debated each other in round 1. The results of these rounds were treated as regular results.

Santa Clara Spring 2008-2009, Round 5
Round 5 results were originally not recorded in the packet, later added. This raised a rumor that the breaks were only based on rounds 1-4. This is not correct, breaks were based on all rounds. The seeds in the packet are given as of round 4 and were not the actual seeds. Speaker awards, however, as listed on POI are based on rounds 1-4, with an exception of a confirmed top speaker award.

Santa Clara Spring 2008-2009, Round 4, Lynbrook GY (Virup Gubba & Robert Ying) v Leland WK (Albert Wu & Wooju Kim)
The round has happened, but the judges switched half-way, which went against the rules of the tournament, so the teams were awarded a double-win and the speakers points awarded by the second judge were not counted.

Suspected errors/rounds with unreported results

CFL # 1 @ Gunn 2008-2009, Round 4, Saratoga AS (Adeeti Agarwal & Connie Shang) v Lynbrook LL (Alice Lin & Betty Liu)
Tab results: Saratoga AS def. Lynbrook LL
Actual Results: unconfirmed

CFL # 1 @ Gunn 2008-2009, Round 4, St. Francis NJ (Peter Nauka & Peter Johnson) v Lynbrook JY (Aakriti Jain & Vincent Yu)
Tab results: St. Francis NJ def. Lynbrook JY
Actual results: unconfirmed

CFL # 2 @ Milpitas 2008-2009, JV, Round 4
Leland MK, Leland PL, Lynbrook YV, Cupertino TY have debated in round 4, but the pairings and the results were not recorded in the packet. This did not impact the awards since all four teams were 2-1 going into round 4. Unfortunately, PoI has not yet been able to recover the results.

Stanford 2008-2009, Round 1, Leland NK (Taman Narayan & Ryan Kuo) v Valencia SH (Zeke Schumaker & Nick Hall)
These two teams were not registered as of round 1, so the TD manually changed the postings to have them debate each other. The ballots for the round were never received, although the JoT packet seems to indicate that Valencia lost the round (although it does not indicate Leland has won it).

CFL State Qualifier 2008-2009, Round 5, Bellarmine BS (Jacob Baker & Remi Sun) v Saratoga AS (Adeeti Agarwal & Connie Shang)
Tab results: Saratoga AS def. Bellarmine BS
Actual results: uncomfirmed

“Lynbrook LJ def. Leland WK (Albert Wu & Wooju Kim) [3-0]”

    We won on a 2-1, not a 3-0.

This all seems to be in dept knowledge. How do you find this information out?

  • Mostly if we have access to the ballots and they don’t match the tab results, it goes to POC. Alternatively our staff members just find out/hear stuff at tournaments.

I just researched the 1st mishap and if that statement is true, then there was another error at MLK. If James Logan CM were really aff then that means they were aff 4 out of 5 times. Luckily Lynbrook RS didn’t have an out of the ordinary pro con ratio.
