35 Comments to POI Rankings 2010-2011

  • atm says:

how many state qual spots are there for TCFL?

  • rebecca says:

WOW. i think GGSA deserves some more slots.

  • Artem says:

No idea, I just compiled the league stats today, hopefully people provide the missing info.
These are the numbers from last year: http://www.pointofinformation.org/news/chssa-parliamentary-debate-state-championship-qualifiers/ , but seeing how the state tourney is changing from 32 teams to 48 teams, league slots are bound to change too.

Even with the current info, I think it’s clear that there exists problem of huge disparities between regions.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

CVFL has 4 or 5 qual spots under the new (48 team) system, because we won PF last year, and got 2nd in Parli.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

And by ‘we’ I mean Granite Bay.

  • Jason says:

    Go GGSA! yeea

  • Anonymous says:

Do these rankings include Stanford? It says “26 January.”

  • Artem says:

    yes

the date doesn’t update when I edit the post

  • Jason Fauss says:

how many pts for state quals? finals and semis

  • Artem says:

I’m still running the numbers to calculate relative league strengths, but I think qualifying to State from GGSA will be worth 8 points.

  • Artem says:

I just finished calculating relative league strengths to determine POI points for squals. You can see the results above.

  • Shauray says:

When will SCU Spring rankings be added in?

  • Artem says:

    hopefully by next weekend

    when will they be up?

  • Artem says:

Final POI Rankings are up. If you want us to fix anything, this is your last chance.

  • Counts says:

    Artem-

My partner for SCU 2 was Thomas Parros not Marco zepeda. I’m sure Thomas would be happy to have his 8 points, but no rush.

    Thanks

    Peter

  • odowddebate says:

Bishop O’Dowd CZ (Peter Counts & Marco Zepeda) should be Bishop O’Dowd CP (Peter Counts & Thomas Parros).

  • Guest says:

I would say that the top 9 (10 if you include logan’s individual ranking)are a pretty accurate representation of the top 10 in the state this year. There is one exception, but all in all job well done Artem.

  • guest2 says:

@guest who would the one exception be? We all have our opinions and if you want to make a claim please be ready to support it with details

  • Benjamin Morris says:

    ^ Such a debater. I love it.

  • Guest says:

I wasnt trying to be mean but you have forced my hand. Peninsula AJ their whole ranking is based off winning two of the weaker tournaments in the state. I mean they went 1-2 at state. 3-2 and dropped at double octos in stanford. And from what I heard got destroyed by O’Dowd DV at pepperdine. Don’t get me wrong. They are a good team and good speakers I just don’t think they are top 10 in the state.

  • Guest3 says:

I would have to agree with Guest

  • Benjamin Morris says:

They hit some tough teams at State (like me!:D).
They reached Octos at Stanford by beating another top ten-ranked team.
There’s something to be said for being good speakers. This activity is a lot about style, and man, did Aaron and Kiyana have that down.

  • Rohit Unni says:

I would have to agree with Ben

  • Guest says:

Ben and Rohit just to make clear, I don’t disagree with you. They are easily top 20. I just don’t think they are top 10. That’s all.

  • Guest3 says:

    Exactly

  • Guest4 says:

Guest and Guest3. What makes you guys so qualified to rank other debaters? Especially since you wont even reveal who you are so we could see YOUR ranking. I agree with Ben and Rohit. I have faced Asemanfar-Johnson before, they have there faults but overall they are definitely top ten material

  • Guest3 says:

    @guest4
You rank them as top 10 yet omit your name so it is somewhat hypocritocal for you to say that we aren’t qualified enough. Moreover I dont believe they are top ten material because I also have debated them and feel like mabie-sukumar or biederman-lindenbusch or the Leland team that isnt top ten or Tu-Zhu could defeat them. I think what guest had to say was accurate in noting that their main points c oooooo me from socal tourneys or smaller ones

  • Guest3 says:

    Sorry for the crazy “come”

  • Artem says:

POI Rankings aren’t intended to measure objective quality of debaters, but rather their success at tournaments. If a very good debater (i.e. Ben Mabie) keeps getting screwed at tournaments, he will be ranked lower than he would be if I just made a list of my favorite debaters.
No rankings formula can measure tournament success perfectly, but I think most formulas would put Aaron and Kiyana in the top 10 based on their records. What you guys think of their debating skills is irrelevant.

  • Jason Fauss says:

I agree with Artem and besides Kiyana and Aaron are chill

  • Guest4 says:

@guest3 you sound very bitter towards Aaron and Kiyana. You have no right to make a unwarranted claim on POI and single out a good team out of spite and jealousy and then refuse to reveal your name. Either you yourself aren’t in the top ten or you just have a lot of free time on your hands.

  • Asemanfar says:

Whoa. Funny how the guests aren’t trying to bash the #6 team when most of their points also came from “illegitimate” SoCal tournaments.. if you have a personal issue with me or my partner that’s fine but I don’t appreciate you hiding your identity while making attacks at a team’s success, that’s just unjust. Anyway I had a lot of fun debating everyone this year and I’m glad we had the opportunity to face the best of the best.. Congrats everyone and good luck next year

  • Johnson says:

As usual I agree with my partner Kiyana. These guests are nothing but cowards. How dare you personally attack Kiyana’s and my performance and then refuse to reveal your identity? If our wins are so “illegitimate” then so are all the other POI points that other teams gained from them. I am disappointed by the guest’s behavior and I hope they are not in the top 10, 15, or 25 because their points are flawed and just outright stupid. That being said, it has been a great season and I have enjoyed debating many of you. Everyone have a great graduation and summer!
