hi im part of rancho bernardo. i didnt know we were ranked, that’s pretty cool haha. rb is part of the SDIVSL
Thanks, edited.
And yea, you break at anything, you’ll pretty much always be ranked.
POI Rankings have been updated to include the recent CLU and Claremont tournaments
CLU: champion-10, finals-7, semis-5, quarters-3
Claremont: champion-13, finals-10, semis-8, quarters-6, 4-1 -5
as always, teams split the points in case of a walkover
team rankings updated!
POI Rankings have been updated through the MLK weekend, barring several corrections. Note that CLU, non-breaking CSULB, and Claremont points have been slightly decreased.
Tentative Rankings Info.
There are 4 invites left at this point: Pepperdine, Stanford, Windsor, and SCU2.
Pepperdine will be Q-4, S-6, F-8, C-11, assuming the field stays under 36 and it breaks to quarters.
Stanford will be O-6, Q-8, S-10, F-12, C-15. If it breaks to doubles, doubles will be 4 points. If it breaks to octas, non-breaking 5-2s will get 5 points.
Windsor will be 2 points for a 3-1, points for 4-0 and finals will depend on field size.
SCU2 and the State Tournament will not count for points this year.
Analy Banana Classic will be included (3-1 2, 4-0 5) if we receive a full results packet.
State qualifiers point values pending.
So quals count, CHSSA doesn’t?
Why don’t SCU 2 and CHSSA state tourney count for end of the year rankings?
Not sure how the “Points by Team” section works, but if this is a sum of individual team points, then I think Windsor’s overall total should be updated to 12.85…the sum of Windsor CL and Windsor NJ. If there is another way club points are assigned, then please ignore this message. BTW…our entire squad loves POI. Thanks for building & maintaining a fun & useful website!
Windsor’s points were calculated, but entered as a 3 instead of a 13. whoops. I’ve updated the post and fixed the problem. Btw school points aren’t adjusted by the individual team formula. Individual teams are judged based on quality and shouldn’t have to pay for not being able to afford the travel expenses to all the tourneys in a state. Schools are judged based on the participation of quality (breaking) teams. yea. I think that was the logic used in determining the system.
@ Ben: that is correct.
Jason is right. My rationale was that quantity – getting a lot of people to join and getting them to go to a lot of tournaments – is a good indicator of club success, whereas quality – doing really well at a few tournaments, not decent at a bunch – is a better indicator of debaters’ success, so Team Rankings have marginally diminishing returns from more tournaments, whereas Club Rankings do not.
The Rankings still have a couple glitches, we’ll fix that soon. Sorry for not keeping some of the stuff (i.e. MLK post) on the site up-to-date, I’ve been really busy recently.
P.S. Thanks to Windsor for the support

How do individual rankings work?
Exactly like team rankings, except that if you earned points with multiple partners, you get all of them. It’s there so that people who switch partners a lot (i.e. Erik) don’t feel sad.
Anyone know what Stanford is breaking to/how many prelims it’ll have?
5 rounds/octas break will be tough to incorporate into the rankings.
http://www.joyoftournaments.com/ca/stanford/info.asp?p=3
Minimum of five, might go as high as seven.
My coach got an email from the Stanford people and their logic is severely misguided. The original plan was 7 prelims(sat:4, sun:3 plus elim, mon: 4 elim). There were talks of trying to reduce it to 5 prelims and finish on sunday night. Which is still ridiculous because rounds will be going til the red eye hours. I personally support 7 prelims (decreases the chance of bad luck for good teams) and its always nice to not have school.
Last year they had 6 prelims and broke to dubs; I don’t see why they can’t do that again…
Although our octas round ended around 10PM last year, I think they just did the next 3 rounds in the span of 3 or 4 hours like SCU did 2 years ago.
Stanford says that a lot of Parli/Pf coaches are opposed to having Monday elims for P/PF..
Official update*
There were equal amounts of coaches voting for 5 rounds, 6 rounds and 7 rounds. They chose 6 prelim rounds as a compromise. There will be 4 rounds Saturday, 2 rounds Sunday and double octos and quarters. Semis and finals will be on Monday. They will break 4-2 based on adjusted speaks(drop lowest and highest) and then double adjusted speaks and then total.
We’re considering using prelims win percentage as a tiebreaker, the same way NPTE does it. The only problem is that we don’t know whether we would be able to get prelim results from all state qualifier (also, Pepperdine and St. Francis prelims are incomplete). What do you guys think?
Here’s how the top 20 would look with tiebreakers:
1. James Logan AM (Niraj Asthana & Ben Mabie) 26.4, 75% (12-4)
2. Bishop O’Dowd AD (Carey Appeldorn & Kate Drew) 20.6, 92% (11-1)

Yay undefeated in prelims. Now if only it were the same for breaks
This site is just great by the way.
The purple brainmonster speaks the Truth.
For school rankings La Jolla (with 7 points) is in SDIVSL
The revised top 20 looks right to me. When stanford is added in, will the same scoring system still be used (sliding percentages starting with 100% for best tournament)?
Yes, we will add Pepperdine, Windsor, Stanford to the rankings in a couple days and the same system will be used.
By the way the “reply” function is now disabled.
Rankings are updated. There are a few mistakes they will be fixed tomorrow.
Just curious how many points were awarded for the Windsor Invitational & how this might compare to the smaller tournament at Cal Lutheran? Thx-
Cal Lutheran Q:3, S:5, F: 7, C:10
Windsor: 3-1:2, F:5.5, C:7
So CLU has 15 varsity teams & the champion gets 10 pts while the Windsor Invitational has 23 varsity teams & the champion gets 7 points? No criticism intended as POI points can work however you wish & everyone loves a scoreboard. Thanks for your hard work on this site.
The rankings started out using the percentile system, but moved towards giving more weigh to the number of rounds. Here is the rationale:
CLU had 9 rounds. If it decided to split itself into 3 3-round tourneys (say, 2 prelims plus finals, or just first seed wins), Iain/Nick would still win all of those, and, if the number of rounds did not count, they would get three times as many points, as they won three 15-team tourneys instead of one, even though they debated the same number of rounds and beat out the same teams. Obviously, such system would unfairly discriminate against tournaments with more rounds.
We actually made Windsor points slightly higher than what an average tournament with 4 rounds would get. To compare, a 3-1 at Windsor gets 2 points, same as a 3-0 at CSULB and Monroe.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for explaining. Makes good sense too!
I see 10 and 12 where’s #11?
There it is. perfect
8. Bishop O’Dowd PV (Miles Pember & Rebecca Vastola) 16.3, 83% (10-2)
our prelim record is actually 89% (16-2) we were 5-1 at santa clara, 5-1 stanford, 6-0 at pepperdine
pepperdine prelims can’t be found anywhere, so it would be unfair to include your’s and noone else’s….
That makes sense, except that appeldorn and drew’s record includes pepperdine. We’ve gone to all the same tournaments.
I have the pepperdine prelims, i can email you the documents if you want them
Jason, prelims for Pepperdine can be found on POI, same place as the elims.
Lynbrook MB should have points weighed.
Lynbrook LL should be included.
Lynbrook MM should have 7 points, not 6. Also, it’s a non-authentic team, so the ranks of teams below it should be bumped up.
Granite Bay GW should have points from Stanford.
P.S. any prelims packets would be greatly appreciated, email us at mail@pointofinformation.org , thanks!
I sent them. Let me know if it didn’t work.
got it, thanks
There. Done. (hopefully)
Have you updated using the results from the CBSR qualifiers?
We haven’t added any state qualifiers yet. If anyone has a results packet from their qualifier, please send it our way.
how would we add it, without having it.
http://trivalleysite.yolasite.com/debatequalresults.php
It’s not a packet, per se, but TCFL parli squals results are there.
There’s just one inconsistency re: Campbell Hall SW (Ryan Samii/Matt Walla). They won round 5, but they’re mistabbed as having lost. Disregard that. Everything else is accurate.
I have the bracket results… What else would you need?
The packet only goes up to round 4, so the rds 5-7 bracket would be appreciated. Thanks.
