89 Comments to 2011-2012 POI National Rankings

  • Artem says:

    non-breaking 4-2 is 3 points I think

  • Keith Corley says:

Ya I was just wondering because of the fact that there were around 33 teams at Pepperdine and there were 9 non-breaking 4-2′s.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Half the Pepperdine field were novices, pulled up to the open division. If you look at the packet, teams like Jefferson HS (which entered only novice), for example, got beaten up on by real Varsity teams. If you take out the ‘gimme’ wins on those teams, 4-2 becomes much less impressive.

  • Rohan says:

At Prospect, we did mix up our teams mid-season: Prospect Nguyen-Latta is now Prospect Srinivasan-Latta and Prospect Mittal-Nguyen, among other changes. How does this affect the rankings, other than making things unnecessarily confusing (our apologies)?

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Don’t worry about that, partnerships switch up all the time (In my junior year, I scored POI points with 4 different partners…).

At the moment, we treat all separate partnerships as completely different teams. Towards the end of the year, we will create the complete rankings, which will include individual standings within the team standings (check out last year’s results to see how that works).

  • jthorpe says:

Thanks to Mr. Morris for updating this with great alacrity.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Points DETAILS reflecting Stanford are up. The rankings for teams and schools will follow shortly.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

POI Rankings have been updated completely with the results from Stanford. As always, if you suspect there is an error, please notify us via a comment.

Congratulations to the 5 teams currently automatically qualified for the California Cup: Los Gatos SG, Windsor FJ, Bishop O’Dowd CD, Mira Loma ML, & Saratoga AC.

  • Lol says:

Can the Windsor Invitational not include [what I believe are not well conceived] pop culture and metaphorical resolutions?

  • Lol says:

And, please, Windsor, learn from the mistakes of Stanford?

Do not give STUPID “pretend-to-be-value” resolutions like these from 2 years ago:

Knowledge should be valued over belief.

  • Lol says:

Pretty please do not tarnish the name of Parli more.

Come on, all these stupid resolutions just give more weight to rhetoric and pretty talk and further devalue real research and analytical argumentation. Maybe the Windsor parli teams are better at the former, but please do not forget everything discussed on the past several threads, throw it out the window, and resort to stupid resolutional-making.

The coach of Windsor: I know you approved the Stanford resolutions. Learn from their failures.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Please be constructive (and hopefully objective) with your criticism…calling things stupid twice in a post doesn’t lend you much credence as an advocate for your position. I also felt the tone was vaguely threatening…you might want to avoid that in the future.

Mr. St.-Amant read the POI discussion that resulted after the Stanford tournament and has undoubtedly taken the opinions of the Parli community into account. This, however, doesn’t mean you’ll be seeing all policy resolutions, nor will metaphorical resolutions be necessarily abolished entirely (some people still like those resolutions!).

  • Thorpe says:

I am in agreement with Mr. Morris. While this site does offer a public forum to voice criticism regarding all things parli, the tone of the criticism has, at times, become personal and insulting (as well as anonymous).

As for lobbing insults at Windsor, come on. Windsor’s Fauss & Jeffrey won UOP, a very policy-heavy invitational and came in second at MLK (a tournament very similar to Stanford in terms of resolutions). Their consistency speaks more to talent and adaptability than a proclivity for a specific type of resolution.

  • :Guest says:

While I do not agree with the tone of “Lol,” he does have a point. The resolutions are increasingly becoming “dumbed down” and not very well-constructed, imho.

Will the suggestions in the previous few threads be heeded when making resolutions for future parli tournaments… or will the status quo be maintained…?

  • Guest says:

I–although not entirely approving of “Spiderman is better than Batman”–am against the idea of taking away of either metaphorical or value motion, they give both sides a more educational debate since it provides both the burden to think on their feet, not use prepared cases or be entirely evidence heavy…. that’d be policy.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Just a note (this may be stating the obvious): If we don’t get packets from Squals, we will not be able to give POI points for those tournaments.

So far, we only have results from TCFL.

Squals that have already happened whose results packets we need: OCSL, CBSR, SDIVSL.

Upcoming Squals: GGSA*, CVFL*, SCDL, CFL, WBFL.

    Unsure of status: YFL, KRFL.

*We are anticipating that GGSA and CVFL will post results through the JOT website.

Points for state quals are constant:
    7 for qualifying
    5 for immediate alternates (Go-Round)
3 for distant alternates (one before Go-Round)

  • Joey Rebbe says:

    Just

  • Joey Rebbe says:

quick question- my partner and I (Oaks Christian RY) had 8.3 POI points prior to this most recent update. There was a two point discrepancy (we were incorrectly listed as losing quarters at Pepperdine), and we were immediate qualifiers for the most recent Squals tournament. According to this information, we should have at least 15.3 points (8.3 + 5 + 2). Why is it that we only have 11.875 points? Clarification would be much appreciated

  • Joey Rebbe says:

    sorry, immediate alternates*

  • jthorpe says:

    @Rebbe

Your points will be modified at the next update. However, utilizing our diminishing returns formula, your total will be as follows based upon your performance at Pepperdine, state qualifier, and Stanford:

    6 + (5 x .95) + (4.5 * .65) = 13.675

  • Benjamin Morris says:

I writing up the revised Points Details right now. The ranking will be updated after WBFL and GGSA quals are finished.

  • parli debater says:

I don’t know where I’d post this, and I know there has been previous discussion on the fact, but currently, my partner and I are on track to qualify for this tournament. However, the California Cup falls exactly on the Saturday of my school’s (along with MANY other schools’) prom. It also conflicts with many college admit weekends. I really, really want to go to the California Cup, and I was wondering if there was any possibility of it changing (either weekends, which would be hard, or changing days). If it could even be made on a Sunday/Monday ordeal, I’m sure everyone would still go, and it would allow those of us with conflicts on that Saturday. Thanks for any consideration!

  • Curious says:

Not to be taken the wrong way or anything, but shouldn’t the two teams that closed out scu2 get 12 points each instead of 13.5? My reasoning was that it’s a similar concept to walkovers–splitting the points (in this case, the 3 points awarded to champion gets divided by half)

  • jthorpe says:

    ^Agreed. We’ll make the change.

  • Armand says:

I thought that looked too generous! That’s fine with me.

  • Curious says:

When will rankings from Cal Cup be factored in? And will Oregon state results be added?

  • jthorpe says:

We’ll probably just update the rankings once after this weekend’s state tournament.

And we’ll definitely include Oregon state results if we can receive the packet.

  • Anonymous says:

I’m assuming CSUF results from this weekend aren’t going to be factored in?

  • jthorpe says:

CSUF will definitely be factored in as well.

  • Debatin' says:

    When will rankings be updated?

  • Debatin' says:

    ?

  • Benjamin Morris says:

As soon as we have time. We don’t get paid to do this, and it takes a long time to tabulate it all.

  • Armand Domalewski says:

    ^ y’all should unionize.

  • Jason Fauss says:

That is no excuse Ben. Please remember that your only job in life is to respond to POI requests. Everything else is (your social life, school, family, etc.) is irrelevant when POI tabulating is required.

  • Artem says:

Fair warning – next person to talk about unionizing will be banned.

  • Armand Domalewski says:

DOWN WITH THE THORPE/ARTEM MACHINE OF OPPRESSION! VIVA LA POI REVOLUCION

  • Debatin' says:

Looks awesome! Thanks for updating. Just wondering, would it be possible to change the titleto include “National”, especially since non-cali teams are ranked high! Perhaps a “2011-2012 POI National Rankings”?

  • Haha says:

Agreed! After all, we’re trying to expand POI onto the national stage, right?

  • vastola says:

no disrespect, but who are “1. Los Gatos SG (Silverman & Gilbert) 49.775″?
i’ve never heard of them. did they debate last year?
