44 Comments to Tournament Calendar 2009-2010

  • added info for PSU Freebie, Sam Barlow, Neah-Kah-Nie Oktoberfest, Holiday Edge, Hap Hingston, Crimson Tide, Viking, Silverton, First Saints

  • Anon says:

Any other universities on the east coast/other places have parli?

  • Anon says:

University of British Columbia should host a good tournament in parli…

    http://www.ubcdebate.com/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.60

Same weekend as the one up in Willamette, though.

  • Anon says:

Oops, never mind… that was last year. You guys might want to give ‘em a call, though, to see if they’ll host a tournament this year. It looks like it was really good at the time.

  • University of British Columbia is in Canada. While Canada does seem to have a fairly developed parli debate circuit (although their parli is very different from American parli), we have decided to stick to covering parli in USA for two reasons.
    1) We are not connected enough to provide any meaningful sort of coverage from another country.
    2) Canada already has lots of parli websites, USA had none before we started POI.

If you are interested in Canadaian debate, try these websites:
    http://www.albertadebate.com/
    http://www.csdf-fcde.ca/english/

  • We weren’t able to find any parli tournaments in East Coast except Yale and Silvers, and those are just adding parli this year. It seems like parli is just beginning to develop there. There were rumors that Pennsylvania is considering adding parli as a state event though.

  • Aditya says:

Is the Banana Classic only for GGSA?

  • anon says:

    any word on pepperdine

  • Banana Classic looks like its GGSA only, though Jason would be a better source of information on that.

Pepperdine’s website is http://faculty.pepperdine.edu/sstonew/high_school_tournament.htm but they haven’t updated it from last year yet. It’s always been late January though.

  • TAbad says:

The Banana Classic tournament at Analy HS is open to all parli competitors and is not limited to GGSA schools.

  • Urfriendya says:

Hello. This site is great. Good job.

    Here’s what Ive been hearing:

UCLA, Cal Berkeley, and McGill University are leaning towards adding parli this year.

    thanks again

  • Arty says:

McGill is in Canada. Also, I believe they’ve had parli for a while by now.

UCLA doesn’t a tournament to begin with (unless you mean VBT). Or did they restart the Bruin VII invite? If so, when is it?

Berkeley adding parli would be great.

  • Aditya says:

Wow let’s hope Cal adds parli.
That would be absolutely amazing. Good way to help publicize parli to more schools too :)

  • Added Pepperdine (SoCal).
Added “I Have a Dream” at Monroe, also in SoCal. We are not a 100% sure Monroe offers parli, but fairly sure it did last year. Also, not sure if Monroe is open to non-TVFL debaters.
The dates for both come from the TVFL website. Seeing how 01/25 is Monday, it’s possible that TVFL accidentally put last year’s dates.

Urfriendya, happy you like the website :) . What are your sources regarding Berkeley adding parli?

  • Calhoun, CSULB, Sam Barlow, Willamette, Whitman have been posted on JOT/DR/FT websites, see new links in the calendar.

  • Erik says:

Definitely, that would be awesome if Berk added Parli. btw what were the results of the Banana Classic?

  • Artem says:

I don’t think Berk would be adding parli. The invite is up – http://commweb.fullerton.edu/jbruschke/webhs/ViewInvite.aspx?ID=5 and it makes no mention of parli.

I’ve been trying to get the Analy results from Harrison (a former Analy debater), but so far didn’t get any. He also wrote the resolutions for the tourney, and now doesn’t remember what they were, so it doesn’t look good.

  • Erik says:

Aww I guess there isn’t going to be parli at Berkley this year. But at least there is Pofo. Also if there are no results posted within the next few weeks, I can just ask Analy at Debate 1.

  • Oktoberfest invitation posted

  • WindwardDebate says:

UCLA Bruin VII 2007 (Which had a horribly delay, when a oaks judge drove to the valley with a ballot and w/o a cellphone) was done by the UCLA debate team. I will enquire if they plan on restarting after last years hiatus. the reasoning was that the team lost money on the tournament due to the fact they have to rent the classrooms from UCLA. Someone should ask VBI to add parli

  • Can’t help but notice your name is WindwardDebate, so we assume you’ll be at CSU Long Beach this weekend? If so, could you please record the resolutions/results and post them here by the end of the weekend? We’d love out website to include more SoCal stuff.

Thanks for the update on UCLA. Have you attended it in 2007? If so, do you remember any results/resolutions?

It’s interesting how you brought up VBI, we were just going to ask Jon Cruz about Victory Brief’s parli plans/history. Their camp used to offer parli before, doesn’t anymore.

  • SCU and Pepperdine invites are up on debateresults – see links above.

  • WindwardDebate says:

Sorry about the inability to cover Parli. Round 1 was The USFG would substantially increase pressure on iran. Round 2 was Health care reform should have a public option. Round 3 was TH would favor diplomacy over military intervention.
The will not be a UCLA Debate invitational this year due to the cost of renting rooms from the campus.

  • Aditya says:

Patriot Invitational updated. It will take place in approximately one month.

  • POI says:

Claremont Invitational, taking place in SoCal in January, has been added.

  • POI says:

Judy McKeever Invitational @ Tualatin HS, OR added. It’ll happen in 3 weeks.

  • POI says:

CLU Invite, taking place in January, has been posted. For some reason, the tourney is running against Claremont.

  • POI says:

Lancer and Winter Classic, both mostly SDIVSL-based invitationals have been added.
MLK-Logan invite is up on JOT.
We’ve also began to compile dates for CHSSA state qualifiers.

  • Sam Gardner says:

Winter Classic does not have parliamentary debate(if it did I would be entered D:)

  • POI says:

As Mr. Gardner pointed out above, Winter Classic does not offer parli, so it was deleted from the list.
To make up for that, we’ve added Winter Invitational @ Westview HS.

Also, Willamette HS will be hosting a tournament in two weeks, and Redmond HS has a tournament in January (running against Pepperdine and PSU).

  • POI says:

    YFL State Qualifier added.

Stanford invite is up on JOT.

Windsor invite has been posted. This year, Windsor is happening earlier, meaning that it will be running against Stanford. In addition, if last year is anything to go by, Windsor will be a GGSA-only tournament, in which case it won’t count for POI Rankings points. The format will most likely be 4 prelims + finals.

  • TAbad says:

Just a clarification that the Windsor tournament this past year was not a GGSA-only tournament, nor do I expect it to be a GGSA-only tourney this year.

  • Aditya says:

If it’s running against Stanford, I really doubt it will draw more than 10-15 teams, if that many…

  • POI says:

McMinnville tournament in Oregon will happen on January 30.

Windsor will count for POI points, granted that it remains open to non-GGSA schools. Stanford attracted 37 GGSA teams last year, whereas Windsor had an 87 team field, so there were at least 50 teams that would go to Windsor, but not Stanford.

  • Wondering says:

    Hi…

Look at the entries @ Cal Lutheran and Claremont. I’m from a SoCal school. Why are so many more entered at Claremont?

  • Iain Lampert says:

Well, Cal Lutheran is a brand-new tourney. This is its first year, and not all coaches even received word of its inception.

  • WindwardDebate says:

So, anybody know why there are zeroish socal tourneys in Sept/Oct/Nov/Dec and at least a dozen in Jan Feb

Anybody want to run one next year in Sept.

  • Artem says:

That’s definitely problematic, and not just in SoCal. The CFL parli Big 4 (SCU, MLK, Stanford, SQuals), as well as the LD bid tourneys CFL debaters attend(CPS, VBD, Stanford, Berkeley, Harker) are all crammed in slightly over 2 months. I hope Garcia grows to offset that, but I’m also surprised there are virtually no tournaments after March.

  • WindwardDebate says:

Ya. Thats the problem… if any of those tournaments went to Sept or Oct they’d have 2x the entries See Jack Howe– Three parli rounds got 75 teams from socal– that was the largest socal parli ever.

  • Artem says:

Can someone tell me what/where the heck is the KRFL league, why is it not listed on the CHSSA website, and what happened with their state qualifier?

  • Jeff says:

When do you think the list for the 2010 season will be up?

  • POI says:

We should have the initial list up in about a month, and we’ll add to it as more info gets released.

  • POI says:

At least two tournaments in the New England are offering parli – Manchester ( http://averill.tabroom.com/?page_id=51 ) and Yale ( https://www.tabroom.com/index/index.mhtml?tourn_id=733&league_id=6 ). The format for both differs significantly from the West Coast model.
