Jon Thorpe
Constraints: Bishop O’Dowd
Background
I have coached the Bishop O’Dowd debate team for the last four years. My experience with debate is commensurate with my coaching experience. Last year the O’Dowd team of Carey Appeldorn & Kate Drew won Santa Clara, the California Cup, and state. I have judged outrounds and final rounds at major tournaments and invitationals.
Approach to judging
I’m a flow judge, so make sure you keep arguments in play throughout the entire debate and don’t drop either your points or your opponents’ points. Addtionally, make sure your link your arguments to the value criteria and please impact things out. Take at least two points of information per constructive and at least one in the closing. Please don’t restate the entire debate during the rebuttals, as I’ve already listened to it. Give me clear voters as to why your side has won the round.
Argument preferences
I don’t mind procedural arguments, and if opp wants to introduce them as a tactic to gum up the aff, be my guest. Aff should be able to debate its way through a procedural argument with alacrity if there’s no there there. If you want to run a K or Ks as your case or a component of your case, go for it.
Presentation preferences
Speak clearly. I can deal with debate theory and jargon, so you don’t need to dumb things down. Be polite and respectful to your opponents. I like it when you look at the judges when responding to a POI.
