Los Gatos: MLK Champions!

Full results

The Los Gatos duo of Adam Silverman & Christina Gilbert (right) defeated Windsor’s Jason Fauss & Jonathan Jeffrey (left) in the championship round of the 2012 MLK Invitational hosted by James Logan High School. Los Gatos (aff) and Windsor (neg) debated the resolution “the biggest political issue of the 2012 campaign is the decline of the middle class” with Los Gatos securing their victory on a 2-1 split decision.

The MLK Invitational is the largest Parliamentary Debate event in the invitational season, save only for the Stanford Invitational. This year, 100 teams competed in the open division.

  • Jeff Leibenhaut says:

I’m in the James Logan parli prep room right now. It has been announced that as of Thursday, CHSSA allows computer use. James Logan, however, will not. I also learned that there was a vote to allow POO’s, but it failed (there was a tie).

I’ll be reporting live with further updates!

  • Jeff Leibenhaut says:

Resolution 1a: This House would talk to Iran

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Lift sanctions on telecommunications with Iran. Now you can talk to Iran, long-distance!

  • Artem says:

OWS should issue a resolution informing the people of Iran that it denounces Ayyatollah Khamenei’s endorsement of the Occupy movement and is looking to establish ties with Iranian democracy activists.
If they run a T saying that Iran = Iranian govt, K their ass

  • Thorpe says:

Round 1B: THW create a new exit strategy for Afghanistan.

The issue on laptops has not been settled. Whether they will be used in the ensuing rounds is to be determined.

    Forgot the conjugation, sorry.

  • Millerick says:

Are they still using colored paper?

  • Millerick says:

    Fixed. Thanks for the clarification.

  • Anonymous says:

    Who are Gupta-Habashi?

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Gupta and Habashi are from Granite Bay. Ishaan Gupta is a very good debater (QF’s at MLK last year, beat Rylan Schaeffer and Akshay Shrivastava at SCU ’09, Semis in Impromptu at CHSSA). I don’t know Justin very well though.

    Re: guest

    Yes they are.

  • Luke Ballmer says:

Gupta and Justin were very, very good. We debated them in Quarters and we lost on a totally accurate 3-0. I wasn’t surprised to hear that Gupta has done as well as has, but Justin was really good too.

I’m excited to watch finals with so many great teams.

  • Anonymous says:

Strange how many of the good teams are being eliminated. Some didn’t even make it past prelims.

Must be a lot of lay judges at this tournament…

  • Anonymous2 says:

    ^ agreed.

Lots of 3 judge panels with 1 flow judge (coach or college) and 2 lays. I’ve heard of lots of incidents where the 2 lays voted differently than the experienced flow judge.

  • Millerick says:

Yes, it is always a very lay tournament. Go Windsor FJ!

  • Thorpe says:

Silverman & Gilbert defeat Fauss & Jeffrey on a 2-1 split.

Jason and Jonathan: You guys are wearing the exact same clothes you were wearing last year.

  • Artem says:

Kudos to Christina and Adam for carrying Kate and Robert’s mantle, to Jason and Jonathan for being in finals twice, and to Robert and Anjana for braving through atrocious resolutions to rep Lynbrook.

  • Jason Fauss says:

Thanks for the embarrassment Ben, much appreciated! We like our system :)

  • Sam Gardner says:

    Thank god for colored paper.

  • Just curious says:

Are the resolutions going to be like these at Stanford?

  • Benjamin Morris says:

There will be a few differences. First, Stanford will have a strike system in place. Second, the topics tend to be more concrete at Stanford. I would take a look at the list of past resolutions from Stanford on POI for the best idea of what their resolutions will be like.

  • Rohit Unni says:

Yeah, Stanford topics can be pretty hit miss, like most of the outrounds 2 years ago were pretty odd, but last year, i remember most were pretty good. Congrats to the champions and Windsor Jason and Jeffrey on a great showing, and also Lynbrook’s Robert and Anjana :D

  • Anonymous says:

Funny how almost half of the higher seed teams were defeated in Double Octas and some were defeated in Octas.

Nice how power-protected worked really well at MLK, from what I can see, haha.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Yeah, that’s actually fairly common. There are a lot of factors causing it:
    1) Resolutions are different every round, making good performance in prelims not necessarily equate to good elim performance.
    2) Different selection preferences of judges in inrounds and outrounds (lay v. technical).
    3) Lay judges have no idea how to give speaks (check the packet to see this).
    4) A good team that hits 2 better teams might be the 3rd best team in the tournament, but still finishes 3-2.
    5) 5 rounds is insufficient to seed a tournament accurately.

Is the round recording going to be posted?
