Ben Mabie and Niraj Asthana from James Logan HS defeated Mira Loma’s Vrinda Agarwal and Justin Lin to take the UOP championship title in varsity parliamentary debate after debating the merits of the UN sanctioning Zimbabwe. In addition to winning the tournament, Ben and Niraj had an undefeated record, were first seed, and placed 4th and 1st in speaker awards respectively. The two received a $5000 check from the University of Pacific as a reward as well. The 2nd speaker was James Harding from Athenian, and the 3rd ranked speaker was Aditya Majumdar of Lynbrook.
In the novice division, Mira Loma cleared 4 out of the 8 teams and closed out both finals and speaker awards.
The Logan squad is led by Tommie Lindsey and Kyle Reykalin, Mira Loma is coached by Neil Forester.

At the awards ceremony, Dr. Marlin Bates announced that the tournament was being renamed to the Jon Schamber Invitational with respect to his mentor and previous debate coach.
To quote Dr. Schamber: “They named this tournament after me a few years ago. Unfortunately, they added the word ‘memorial’ after my name. Let’s hope that this time is better.”

P.S. With UOP points added to the 2009-2010 POI Rankings, Sanger maintains its leader position, James Logan is now the runner up, and Lynbrook comes in third.

I received a word that Lynbrook MB (Majumdar/Bora) cleared. Congrats, guys.

    Does anyone have full breaks?

  • POI says:

    Some records:
    Lynbrook MB 5-0
    Lynbrook YL 3-2/didn’t clear

You’ll break the curse eventually, Robby.
Condolences to Aditya/Indranil, who went undefeated in prelims only to hit the Long Beach champions in octas.
And congrats to Erik on clearing. If you are still in by quarters, post updates.
Same goes for everyone else who’s in Stockton tomorrow – please keep us updated.

  • Robert's coverage says:

Single-flighted Open Parliamentary debate started today, Friday, at 3:30 PM

    Rules:
    Laptop Prep
    10 minute forfeiture

    Interesting Facts:
7 teams from 7 schools were disqualified in the first round for being late. Both the teams disqualified and the teams that we supposed to debate received 0 speaker points for that round.

Tourney is running mostly on time, with slight variation each round from the designated schedule.

Judging pool appears to be primarily UOP students, with a scattering of former debaters as well.

I just updated the story, the seedings, the speaker ranks…
I find it interesting that half the high seeds were upset in Octas and thus Quarters had some really interesting matchups.
