Finals of the second annual Robert Garcia Invitational featured the top seeded team Aditya Majumdar and Indranil Bora from Lynbrook and the second seed team Benjamin Morris and Kunal Shah from Mira Loma debating the topic “Resolved: Vegan is the new black.” In a debate where the Government interpreted the resolution to mean that vegans are currently discriminated against like African Americans in the 1960s, Lynbrook, which argued for the Opposition, won on an unanimous vote of the three judges.

Aditya and Indranil defended the Saint Francis title, which Lynbrook won at the inaugural tournament in 2009. Pargat Singh, one half of last season’s championship duo, won the Public Forum division this year.

The initial field of 11 was pared down to the top 4 teams after 6 preliminary rounds. Congratulations are also in order for the semifinalist teams of Ruicong Yan and Karthik Viswanathan from Lynbrook, and Eugene Lee and Sashank Tatipamula of Valley Christian.

Aditya also won the top speaker award, while Ben took second; the two were far ahead of the rest of the field. Prerana Vaddi from Notre Dame took third; Kunal Shah, who tried out parli for the first time, placed fifth.

Indranil and Aditya are coached by Ryan Lawrence; Kunal and Ben are coached by Neil Forester.

    R1: THW rock the vote.

  • Iain Lampert says:

Which teams did LN and MM face?

  • Jeff Leibenhaut says:

Round 2 Resolution: The U.S. should ban offshore drilling

  • Aditya says:

Round 3: TH believes that Superman is better than Batman.

Ironically, this was the exact same resolution we used at Lynbrook’s demo day for freshmen 2 years ago. Of course, that was in an auditorium filled with 100 kids, and the debate then was shortened/more humorous, but I find it hilarious that this was a topic used in a real tournament.

  • Patrick Lin says:

I remember watching the Superman v Batman debate. It was freaking hilarious.

    Aditya, how is that ironic?

  • Aditya says:

Because along with the other captains that year, I decided that we would choose a res that’s so absurd it would draw interest and get people to join parli, but also something that would never actually be used in a tournaments. Guess we were wrong? Sean was our coach that year; I wonder if he’s writing resolutions here haha

  • Patrick Lin says:

Remember Henry’s resolutions? Some of them were fairly ridiculous.

  • Aditya says:

Rd. 4 The United States should tear down the Hoover Dam.

  • Jeff Leibenhaut says:

Rd. 5 California should implement a health tax on fast food chain restaurants..

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Tournament is pushing rounds forward due to low IE enrollment. R6 of parli will be at 2:45.

  • Aditya says:

  • wat teams made it 2 the playoff rounds?

  • Alice says:

    Breaks:
    Lynbrook MB
    Lynbrook VY
    Mira Loma MS
    Valley Christian VT

  • Aditya says:

We don’t know seeds yet, but whoever is the 1st seed clearly determines the entire bracket.

  • Rohit Unni says:

Some quite lolzy topics there. Everyone knows Aquaman is the best. Congrats to all who broke. But this tournament….I don’t know….

  • Kunal Shah says:

    Correction:

Valley Christian LT (Eugene Lee & Sashank Tatipamula)

    Good Luck to Everyone!!

  • Sarah McGuinn says:

Topics and less people aside, the tournament is actually reasonably well run, more efficient than any invitational I can remember attending in recent memory. Also, some good teams among the field that is here.

But yeah, I rolled my eyes so hard at the topics last night. Batman vs. superman is a perpetual joke topic for demoing for novices.

  • Alice says:

Yeah, it was cool that we got out pretty early, though it got confusing sometimes when they moved things up.

And I was rejoicing that I wouldn’t have to debate Batman vs Superman this year when we got vocational training as the demo topic at league demo day (okay, we definitely totally bored everyone, but still…), but I suppose I spoke too soon. It was a fun round, though. Very silly because we couldn’t think of a legitimate way to interpret it metaphorically, but it was fun.

  • Kunal Shah says:

    Semifinal Pairings:

Lynbrook BM (1st Seed) vs Valley Christian (3rd Seed)

Mira Loma MS (1st Seed) vs Lynbrook VY (4th Seed)

  • Kunal Shah says:

    Flight One:

    Gov: Lynbrook BM (1st Seed)
    Opp: Valley Christian (3rd Seed)

Resolved: It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.

  • Aditya says:

    *Correction to Kunal’s first post.

    Seeds:
    1. Lynbrook BM
    2. Mira Loma MS
    3. Valley Christian TL
    4. Lynbrook VY

    Finals:
Mira Loma MS (Gov) vs. Lynbrook BM (Opp)

    Res:
Finals: Vegan is the new black.

FLight 2/Semis: Debate is the death of conversation.

Finals was interesting… totally weird definition, botched T, PMR stating Opp dropped all aff args, and just a strange debate overall.

    Kunal/Ben can probably explain more.

  • Artem says:

somebody should be taking the finalist picture

  • Artem says:

    Finals:
Lynbrook MB def Mira Loma MS [3-0]

Aditya was also top seed and top speaker

  • Kunal Shah says:

Lynbrook BM won the Garcia Invitational against Mira Loma MS. We don’t know the ballot count nor rfd. I’ll post a pic of the finalists later.

Overall well run tournament. Good experience for my first parli.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Top Three Speakers (in order) were Aditya Majumdar, Benjamin Morris, and Prerena Vaddi.

  • Sarah McGuinn says:

Also, slight correction: Notre Dame VF ended up with the bye round 5 because they didn’t want to give the St. Francis team 2 byes in a row and they also were both in Impromptu.

Now I’m kinda bummed they didn’t give speaker awards for Parli, but Prerana ended up 2nd in Impromptu anyway, so whatever.

  • Iain Lampert says:

Do you have full Impromptu results?

  • Rohit Unni says:

Woo! Congrats Aditya,Indranil for 1st seed 1st place and Aditya first speaker. Hopefully winning St Francis can be a tradition for Lynbrook from now on :)

  • Aditya says:

    Yeah, Impromptu:
Place, Name, Ranks(per round), Total Ranks
    1. Nura Kawa 3 1 1 2 7
    2. Prerana Vaddi 1 3 3 1 8
    3. Adrienne Furniss 2 2 5 3 12
    4. Jade Theriault 4 4 2 4 14
*2/3 are also Notre Dame VF as commented above.

To be clear, there were actually 6 entries in impromptu. It was a policy of this tournament, that students from the host school (St Francis) would not be able to advance to elimination rounds in any events. Thus, 2 other students actually competed in the first 3 preliminary impromptu rounds, while the 4th round was designated as finals.

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Does anyone else’s trophy from SF say “Parliamentatry” instead of “Parliamentary”?

  • Aditya says:

Mine does! Not surprised, parli in general is seen as an afterthought at most tournaments…

  • Aditya says:

BTW Artem’s wondering if Kunal can upload/send the finalist pic soon

  • Jason says:

    LOL aditya won

  • Artem says:

    I know, right?

  • Rohit Unni says:

You two are so mean lol

  • Patrick Lin says:

It was a policy of this tournament, that students from the host school (St Francis) would not be able to advance to elimination rounds in any events.

WTH? This is among the stupidest tournament rules I’ve heard.

  • Rohit Unni says:

If only Logan had those rules
