SCU 2010

The 2010 Santa Clara Dempsey-Cronin Invitational starts Friday, December 10th. The pool is 56 debaters, from all over Northern California. Santa Clara runs 5 preliminary rounds and breaks to a full octofinal round. Last year’s winners, Bishop O’Dowd’s Carey Appeldorn & Kate Drew, went on to win the California Cup and the State Championship. Last year’s top speaker at SCU, Rylan Schaeffer, will be returning this year.

SCU also uses a unique topic selection, where three topics are given each round, and both Aff and Neg may strike one to determine which topic will be debated.

  • Coach St. Amant says:

I am curious — who strikes topics first in this format, aff or neg? Also is this the same format used at Stanford?? Thx!

  • Benjamin Morris says:

I believe the negative strikes first. I am not certain.

Stanford runs the same three topic style, but everything is done through a central prep room at Stanford. You meet with your opponents in the prep room and decide which topic (written on the board) you’ll debate before prepping.

At Santa Clara, all prep is done in-room, and judges just give debaters a sheet of paper, and they literally cross out a topic option with their strike.

  • Sarah McGuinn says:

To answer your questions, these topics are either exactly the same as SCU2 or very slight variations.

  • Kunal says:

Pofo winners were: Leland OW (Jordan Olmstead & Nick Wu) walked over Leland CS (Yvonne Chen & Joanne So). Leland OW were walked over in finals last year.
I find it ironic that Pofo results were posted on a Parli website before the Parli ones were.

  • Sarah McGuinn says:

I have the IE packet, so I can give IMP results:

    1st-Shiran Sukumar
    2nd Prerana Vaddi
    3rd Harleen Kaur
4th Adil Majid (2-4 were tied, broken with tie breaker based on speaks)
    5th Aparna Dhinakaran
    6th Ben Mabie
    7th Rylan Schaeffer

And yes, I’m a bit proud, as Notre Dame cleaned up in Impromptu (we also had 1st place Novice Impromptu), and we also had 2nd place Parli speaker.

  • Sarah McGuinn says:

Oh, Prerana Vaddi and Harleen Kaur are both from NDSJ.

Prerana is also half of Notre Dame FV who cleared to Quarters.
