After uncovering the 2008 CFL SQuals results packet in India and extracting it from an ole’ gramophone (courtesy of Ritik Malhotra), and receiving the results of this year’s Jack Howe Invitational we now finally have enough data to release the 2007-2008 POI Rankings and start the rankings for this season (see links above). New POI rankings no longer include league results and have slightly decreased points for CFL SQuals. In addition, starting this season, we will expand to include all California (however the 07-08 ans 08-09 rankings will still be confined to CHSSA Area 1). Below are the finalized ranking rules; the old version can be found here.

A. Team Rankings Points
The total point value for each team shall be calculated as follows:
(points from best tournament)(1) + (points from second best tournament)(0.95) + (points from third best tournament)(0.65) + (points from fourth best tournament)(0.3) + (points from fifth best tournament)(0.1)
For example, a team that went to 7 tournaments and got 7,0,4,6,4,3,3 points respectively would get a total of (7)(1)+(6)(0.95)+(4)(0.65)+(4)(0.3)+(3)(0.1)=16.8 points

B. Points eligibility
1) Only results from varsity divisions will be used.
2) Only California invitationals that are open to all schools and the CHSSA State Qualifiers shall award POI points.
3) Any club or tournament in California is eligible. Teams from outside of California can still earn points, but only at Californian invitationals.
4) Only two-person teams are eligible.

C. Walkovers
In an event of a walkover, the points from the elim round in which the walkover happened should be split equally among the two teams. The same rule applies to closeouts in finals.

D. Tournament points
1) Invitationals
Break: 4 points
Outround win: 2 points
Championship: 1 point
2) Exceptions
St. Francis: Q-5, S-6, F-8, C-11
CSULB: 3-0 – 2, Q-5, S-7, F-9, C-12
UOP: O-3, Q-5, S-7, F-9, C-12
Patriot: Q-0, S-3, F-5.5, C-8
Windsor: TBD
Analy: TBD
Pepperdine: TBD

3) State Qualifiers
CFL/GGSA: 3-2 – 2, 4-1/4-2 – 4, alternate – 6, qualifier – 9
others: TBD

E. Authentic Teams
1) An authentic team is a team where neither member is also a member of a higher ranked authentic team. In the event that a debater is a member if two equally ranked teams, one of those teams shall randomly be named non-authentic.
2) Non-authentic teams shall be ranked, but their ranks will be enclosed in parenthesis on the rankings.
3) A team’s rank equals a number of authentic teams that rank higher than it plus one.

F. Club Rankings tiebreakers
1) the sum of all unweighted (e.g. not weighted by Section A rules) points of all its teams (including non-authentic)
2) number of authentic ranked teams
3) number of ranked teams

The following changes have been made:

We got rid of a hard cap at two tournaments and implemented a soft cap system with marginally diminishing returns from each next tournament. The system is described in Section A.

The numbers in Section A are based on a statistical measure of tournament attendance among the top 30 teams on the rankings. In a 54 team sample, 54 teams went to at least 1 tournament, 51 teams went to at least 2 tournaments, 35 teams went to at least 3 tournaments, 16 teams went to at least 4 tournaments, and 5 teams went to 5 tournaments. This includes tournaments that will be included in 2009-2010 rankings but were not included in previous rankings, includes tournaments at which teams did not receive POI points, and excludes league tournaments.

UOP and Patriot have been added to exceptions in Section D.

2009-2010 points have been recalculated under the new system, with points from SCU and Patriot added. Windsor points have been re-added to the 2008-2009 rankings.

Howdy. First, off, this site is amazing. Your level of dedication to Parli is awesome.

I’m just wondering how CHSSA State Qual points will be distributed by league. Will the total number of points gained in invites by that league play a role in distribution?

  • POI says:

    Thanks!

Squals points are problematic because this is the first year that we’ve extended POI Rankings beyond GGSA/CFL, so we are unsure about how we will deal with other leagues, or even how to get a results packet from each league. We’ve tried using POI points to determine tournament quality in the past, and it did not work very well. The problem with ranking leagues by the total number of points they gained is that it that it perpetuates the already present regional inequality, that is, CFL/GGSA will get more points not because CFL/GGSA debaters are inherently better, but just because Bay Area has a bunch of parli tournaments. So given our unfamiliarity with local circuits outside of Bay Area, we will most likely just go by the two most objective factors – field size and number of rounds, and we will avoid giving one squal more weight than another unless there is a really glaring difference. We view squals points as a kind of regional equalizer, as we trust the CHSSA board to use its best judgment when assigning the number of qualifying slots to each league.

Since we are including SoCal tournies, are these rankings for all of california?

  • BenjaminMorris says:

Ok, that sounds pretty fair then. We in the SacVFL post pretty much everything on JOT, so it shouldn’t be too tough to find ours. Of course, some other leagues, it might be a little more problematic to get them.

I’m guessing they’re waiting until the 4-1′s from Claremont are up to update ranks.
