  • Benjamin Morris says:

My information came from an email from a TVFL coach who was at the CHSSA meeting where the amendment was passed. I can forward it to you if you need confirmation, Mr. St. Amant.

  • Congrats on sleuthing this out so quickly as this amendment wasn’t on the agenda for the May 7 CHSSA meeting but was apparently introduced, passed and approved for implementation ASAP. Now perhaps other tournaments will also allow computers in Parli prep. Should be fun to see how this plays out…

  • Michael says:

Which Tournaments qualify for POI points? And which tournaments are left for this season?

  • Benjamin Morris says:

All tournaments except for league tournaments (STATE QUALS DO COUNT) get POI points, as long as somebody submits the results to us.

Stanford, Windsor, possibly another Prospect?, SCU2, Calcup, Squals, and State are the remaining Parli tournaments of the year.

  • Michael says:

Thank you for the above information. If i really wanted to get into Stanford, is there anyway possible I could get my team into the tournament eventhough the deadline has passed?

  • Artem says:

There’s a chance they’d still let you in, you should email them ASAP

  • Barry Fike says:

My team from pepperdine (OaksChristian RY) defeated Simivalley gm. This is posted incorrectly in the quarter final round and made it to the Semis. Could you please make this correction in your rankings?

    Barry Fike
    Coach

  • Benjamin Morris says:

    With that in mind:
Oaks Christian RY should have 10.275 points, moving them into 28th on the rankings.
Simi Valley GM should have 4 points.

This will be reflected in the next round of updates to the rankings (after Windsor and Squals). We hope the revised totals (not integrated into the rankings yet) will be adequate for now.

  • Joey Rebbe says:

Thank you, Benjamin, for your recognition of this point error. It is indeed adequate if the points are integrated after Squals, as long as they are factored in at some point. Thanks again for your time and consideration.

  • Rohan says:

Are there any tournaments on May 19th that would conflict with a [postponed] Prospect tournament in California?

Anything going on in the college circuit either (some available flow judges)?

The new date is due to a rumored PoFo tournament on April 6-7.

  • debater says:

Who would go to a tournament that late in the season? Most schools’ seasons will be over before then anyways. And rescheduling the tournament because there is a “rumored pofo tournament” destroys the legitimacy of your new tournament. Id recommend you keep april 8. What is this mysterious new pofo tournament..?

  • Rohan says:

Debater, you make a good point. However, April 8th does not work for our coach, who will be in Oregon at the time. Furthermore, due to other school activities taking place, we wouldn’t be able to host as many debaters as we would like. Finally, that day is Easter Sunday, which would inconvenience a large number of debaters.

I agree that late May is inconvenient for many. We chose this day because A) it does not conflict with any known tournaments in the area (states and calicup have occupied the late April slots) and B) it does not conflict with AP testing or AP test prep weekends.

Thanks for your input, though. I agree that hosting a tournament that late in the year has its risks. However, is everyone averse to a season-ending tournament (before Nats for PoFo, that is)? Send us your input before we finalize a date. Thanks!

  • a wise brah says:

i would definitely go to a prospect tournament, especially if you guys would consider factoring it into poi rankings

  • Artem says:

all invites count for POI Rankings

  • sohil sathe says:

are the initial POI rankings for next year just carried over from the end of this year?

  • Artem says:

no, we start over each season

  • sohil sathe says:

as in the preliminary rankings before any tournaments take place? correct me if i’m wrong but i remember there being rankings somewhere around august/september last year

  • Thorpe says:

I don’t think the first rankings appeared this year until after Santa Clara. There are no preliminary rankings since there’s no data available.

  • Rohan says:

It’s after the CaliCup, but I guess POI will still factor it in to the rankings…also, our last tournament counted for NFL points so it’s safe to assume that this upcoming one will as well.
I think we have enough schools interested to finalize the date as May 19—I’ll run that by the tournament director before emailing POI and contacting JOT to set up “official” notices and registration.
Just out of curiosity, PuFo people out there: a) why are you even here, and b) would you prefer the April rez or the Nats rez? Parli gets the resolution badassery of Thomas Belesiu (SCU1′s guy).

  • Guest says:

This was a fantastic season. Does POI do end of the season awards? Who do you think are the top 5 1st speakers? How about the top 5 2nd speakers?

  • Anon says:

Was the Prospect Invitational tournament finalized? If so, is the PF division varsity/what were the finalized dates?

  • Firoz Gill says:

Prospect Invitational is set for May 19th. But i have no other information.

  • Rohan says:

Prospect’s Hays Invitational is finalized for May 19. Registration will begin on Joy of Tournaments tomorrow.

There will be Open Parli and Novice Parli–unless more people express interest/register for Novice Public Forum, it will be folded into a single Public Forum division.

Contact me if you have any questions at prospectdebate@gmail.com!

  • Firoz Gill says:

When will the Prospect info be up on JOT?

  • Rohan says:

On behalf of our entire bureaucracy, I’d like to apologize for the delay getting the Hays information online.

However, it’s finally online at http://www.joyoftournaments.com/ca/prospect-spring/

    See y’all there!

  • Shreyas Tirumala says:

Is there any more information available for that “Race for the California Cup” in September? Is that just an open invitational at Bishop O’ Dowd where any teams can compete or is it only for the teams that attended TOC this year?

  • Who from POI will be at NFL Nationals this year (in Extemp, PoFo, Congress…)? ND’s Prerana Vaddi was named a Student of the Year finalist, so even though she didn’t qual in Extemp, they are allowing her to compete in Impromptu (which is her better event anyway). Anyone else going to be there? She wants to watch rounds.

  • Shaan Cold says:

Partner and I have decided to delve into Parli after stints in Extemp and Impromptu. Interested in knowing deeper techniques involved in the event, such as ”picks” and ”perms”, apart from the basic values, etc. Where would be a good place to get some quick knowledge on that?

  • Jeff Leibenhaut says:

The wikipedia page for policy debate has great explanations for PICs and perms. If you’re looking into how to specifically run something, a google search of “_____ debate” should give you a few word docs from policy or LD with shells and cards, which should show the instances where it’s appropriate to run something.

Just remember that parli is a hodgepodge of policy and LD.

  • Artem says:

It’s spelled “PIC,” not “pick.” It’s an acronym for “plan-inclusive counterplan.”

I hope you find our Resources section useful. The parli handbook (http://www.pointofinformation.org/files/resources/parli-handbook/) is the introduction for novices; for more advanced concepts I’d particularly recommend the 4 “tech” links (http://www.pointofinformation.org/resources/links/)

  • Christina Gilbert says:

    @Sarah McGuinn

Adam and I will be in Indianapolis this summer, I’ll be in the Senate, and he’ll be in the House. Hope to see you there! I also echo your question, who else is going to be there?

  • Jeff Leibenhaut says:

I’ll be joining Christina in the senate

  • Armand Domalewski says:

Once again, the powers that be at the NFL decided to host nationals during my finals week, so I will not be there. But if you’re doing Congress, you may see a certain tall Indian kid getting marching orders over the phone…

  • Jakob Christensen says:

Any word on the creation of a 2012-2013 recognized tournament list?

Also, has anyone seen or heard of the dates for SCUI or SCUII? Perhaps Armand could share insider information on that?

  • Jakob Christensen says:

Further google-ing has returned this website for the SCU Fall HS invitational. The SEO on that site is tragic; it took very specific search parameters to unearth this. Link: https://www.tabroom.com/index/tourn/index.mhtml?tourn_id=1539

  • Armand Domalewski says:

    email mjaich@scu.edu

  • Saifullah Khan says:

I mainly use POI to look up old resolutions, do you think that the “List of Past Resolutions” could be added to the sidebar under “Featured Pages”?

  • Rohan says:

Is anyone’s prom on April 27?

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Thoughts on the expansion of Parliamentary Debate at the high school level:

Directly lobbying the NFL is unlikely to do any good, there isn’t enough interest nationwide to warrant the extra logistical challenge of adding another event.

There are currently small areas of the country with substantial interest in parliamentary debate, but in most areas the event is not practiced or known whatsoever.

How do we change this? I would contend that lobbying state-level forensics associations would be somewhat difficult. They tend to be very bureaucratic and slow to change (maybe I’m just speaking for CHSSA). But somehow, the event still needs to get out there.

So here’s the plan: POI should approach mid-to-large size invitational tournaments outside the state of California and offer to run divisions of parliamentary debate at these tournaments. Ideally, the PD division would be run alongside the IE panel (if there is one), to entice debaters to do Parli in addition to their main debate event.

    Thoughts? Counterplans?

  • Armand Domalewski says:

I think we should continue this discussion on the post I made, since most of the people discussing it were on there.

I haven’t dealt with CHSSA but I do think that consolidation in Cali should be the first priority, because this is where we have the most influence.

A few items on the agenda, then.

    1. Can we create a set of proposals that all the Cali parli coaches can agree on? Given that we have a large chunk of the community here, we should be able to vote on said reforms at whatever CHSSA meeting exists for this purpose.
    2. We need to clean house with big cali invites.

The ones that I think are problematic include: Stanford, MLK, Windsor (to a lesser extent), Fullerton? Am I missing anything?

    So we need to
    a) agree on a set of changes
    b) agree on some way to get whoever runs them to agree to those changes.

I do think that the out of state approach is cool too, but I don’t know where we’d get the money to cover travel and all that, plus it’s hard to say “cali parli is great, you should do it too” if our own house is a mess. I’m not opposed to that idea too, though.

  • Artem says:

ASU offered parli last year and this year (they even linked to POI), but it seems that they didn’t get enough interest to actually have a parli division

    2013 Texas Parliamentary Debate Championship

    Check it out

  • Benjamin Morris says:

That’s great to see, but I highly doubt that schedule goes according to plan.

  • Jason Fauss says:

I’m sure there will be a separate thread for this, but where are high school seniors going to college?
