Rebecca Vastola and Kevin Daley dine on pepper
The final round of Pepperdine Invitational featured Debbie Garcia and Erin Smith (Valencia GS) defending the topic “The US federal government should invest in a long term job creation program” against the Opposition team of Becky Vastola and Kevin Daley (Bishop O’Dowd VS). On a unanimous decision of the judges, Becky and Kevin went on to take the tournament title.
Ms. Vastola was also named top speaker.
Bishop O’Dowd is coached by Jon Thorpe, Valencia is coached by Joseph Marcucilli. Together, the two schools qualified seven of the eleven octafinalists.
A prelim round between Vastola/Daley and Claremont champions Asemanfar/Johnson (PV Peninsula) has been videotaped.
POI would like to thank the Bishop O’Dowd squad for providing real time coverage of the tournament.

Way to go BOD! Rep Norcal.
We’ll try to remember the rest of the resolutions and fill in the gaps at some point in the near future.
Resolutions have been very solid and very, very policy oriented. The tournament is run very well by the Pepperdine Debate Team and has not fallen too far behind schedule. Judging has also been solid and the pool seems to have a higher percentage of experienced parent judges and college judges than other tournaments. O’Dowd contributed Carey Appeldron and Miles Pember to the judging pool. While it may not be the largest tournament, the tournament does work hard to take care of the teams. There is free food and beverages and, what we think is a masterstroke, they assign one event to a building. So the communications building we were debating in the last two days hosted only parliamentary debate. Each event has its own tab room, and the tab room is in the same building in which the events are occurring. This leads to shorter delays than normal between rounds.
Odowd DV takes Pepperdine 3-0.

Im sorry for any mistakes; I’m doing this mostly from memory
Sorry it posted twice…on 3G coverage. Kinda.
I like how Valencia GS advanced directly from Round 6 to Finals due to walkovers.
Pepperdine does not break brackets. Valencia ended up being paired against Valencia teams in the quarters and semis. Pepperdine requires the coach choose who advances, thus Valencia ended up walking over two of its teams to reach the finals.
Wow! Congrats to Kevin and Becky!
Is it just me or did the octo’s resolution seem opp heavy being that there are bound to be holes in comprehensive healthcare if there is only 15 minutes to prep. I mean the current bill is 3000 pages long. Just a thought.
I agree…
^ Gov could probably just say “pass public option through normal means.” Parli has a rather liberal approach to plantext specificity.
i agree; the octo resolution was a fairly tough one. opp teams did seem to hit on lack of specificity and/or holes.
Is there a website that would show what the state rankings for parli teams?
I think you are referring to this -
