Carlsbad takes Long Beach

View full results for Jack Howe @ CSU Long Beach 2010-2011

CSULB finalists, left to right - Natasha Maldi, Sam Gardner, Kiyana Asemanfar, Aaron Johnson

The 2010 Jack Howe invitational concluded tonight. In what was by far the hardest break of the year, a 58 team field was weeded out to 8 quarterfinalists after three preliminary rounds.

In the final round, a Carlsbad team of Natasha Maldi and Sam Gardner faced Aaron Johnson and Kiyana Asemanfar from PV Peninsula. Natasha and Sam picked up on a 2-1 vote of the judges. Following Alice Lin’s victory at the ODI camp tournament and Aditya Majumdar winning St. Francis, CSULB becomes the third tournament this season won by a POI editor.

On its way to the first place trophy, Carlsbad defeated Lauren Kelly, one half of the 2009 championship team, in quarterfinals, and the 2009&2010 CSULB top speaker Micheal Daugherty of Claremont in semifinals. The 2008 champions attended the tournament but did not clear.

The top seed team, Jason Park and Kevin Huang from University, as well as Liam Neubling and Sarah Murray from Servite forfeited their quarterfinal rounds due to a communication failure.

Iain over here sayin judging be WACK, but what was WACK was that this entire novice division be just one giant social event. Due to how I, included with pretty much dozens of other teams, hasd to wait an extra two hours for the posting of the 3rd round. Even though, it be koo up in da LB.

  • Ngozi Taylor says:

  • Artem says:

“Sam: Hopefully the finalist picture will be one of those 13 y/o girl mirror shots :D .”

    Well played, little girl.

  • Iain Lampert says:

Carlsbad (3) won the final round on a 2-1 against Pv Peninsula H.S. AJ (Asemanfar & Johnson) (5).

They beat Claremont AD (2) on a 3-0 in sems, and Sanger High School KV (Kelly & Virk) (6) on a 3-0 in quarters.

    Natasha was 7th speaker.

Alex Patel of Valencia was 3rd speaker.

University High HP (Huang & Park) and Servite NM (Nuebling & Murray) failed to show up to quarters on time due to a lack of coach and communication, so they were dropped–which is a huge shame, since University was 1st seed.

Michael Daughtery of Claremont took 1st speaker…for the second year in a row. Props.

I’ve got pictures of the finalists, but no way to put them on my computer. Give me a sec!

  • Kevin Huang says:

  • Artem says:

    Kevin, that sucks :/
If you end up applying for a CalCup at-large (do it!), we’ll take that into account.

Props to Natasha and Sam on the win.

  • Kevin Huang says:

    lol thx man
    but whats calcup???
    and how do i apply?

  • Artem says:

    @Kevin
CalCup is short for California Cup.
It’s a tourney POI/Lynbrook organized last year for top 18 teams in the state, as determined by POI Rankings (performance at invitationals and squals). At-large applications were for teams that weren’t high on the rankings (didn’t attend enough tourneys, partner changes, didn’t show up to their elim round ;) ), but were still good.
I’m planning to organize the tournament again this year, but I’m still in the process of securing rooms etc, so invite should be up later.

Last year’s CalCup attracted champions of St. Francis, UOP, SCU, MLK-Logan, Claremont, Pepperdine, Cal Lutheran, Stanford, and CA State, here’re the details:

  • Sam Gardner says:

  • Alice says:

    Congrats Sam and Natasha!

Looking forward to facing you guys again! (Will you be at Stanford/POI cup this year?)

And yay for fairly legit topics.

  • Sam Gardner says:

We’ll (hopefully) be at the Cal Cup. Idk about Stanford yet
