Kate Drew and Carey Appeldorn win the 2010 California State Tournament

View full results for CHSSA State 2009-2010

The final round of the 2010 California State Tournament was a deviation from tradition – it was not a NorCal v SoCal grudge match. Instead, both finalists, Matt O’Brien and Gary Nielsen from Granite Bay (Sacro) and Kate Drew and Carey Appeldorn from Bishop O’Dowd (GGSA), represented the better half of California. On a 5-2 decision, the Bishop O’Dowd duo went on to win the state title, only two weeks after they defeated Logan for the California Cup championship. Their victory at the state’s two most elite tournaments, combined with their spectacular performance at the four regular season tournaments (they only lost one elimination round this year) makes Kate and Carey one of the five teams in history to earn over 30 POI points – and the only team to earn over 40. Bishop O’Dowd is coached by Jon Thorpe; Granite Bay is coached by Rita Prichard.

    *I think*
    Lynbrook MN 1-2
    Cleveland LM 2-1

    any other results?

  • Aditya says:

Apparently Cleveland thought that they were 2-0 going into round 3 against lynbrook, but from what artem says above, it would make sense that both were 1-1 and Cleveland won in round three. I don’t know anything else but they’ve posted breaks on the joyoftournaments website using team codes
    Posted from my iPhone.

  • Artem says:

I assumed Cleveland was 1-1 based on powermatching, but then, states don’t have the best tab, so could have been a pull-up.

  • Rohit says:

Interesting turnout. I predict epic CFL Bellarmine vs some uber GGSA team in finals. Or maybe Mira Loma AL. Lots of good teams

  • j. g.cameron says:

Might anyone update the current results? Thanks

  • Giles Cohen says:

Bentley and O’Dowd both received byes into the semifinal round.

    Your 2010 CHSSA SemiFinalists…

    1) Cleveland LM
    2.) Miraloma AL
    3.) Bishop O’Dowd AD
4.) Bellarmine PH* (ACTUAL- not Bentley)

  • Giles Cohen says:

    That’s odd . . . considering Bentley went 5 – 0, i’m wondering how they didn’t advance and why they’re currently prepping.

  • Ben says:

Bellarmine 5-0 and currently prepping. All of the above teams went 5-0. Check your facts…

  • Ben says:

    who are you giles cohen?

  • Ben says:

maybe i shuld check my facts… i checked.. he’s right. I apologize giles

  • Sue says:

    What’s Cleveland’s current status?

  • Ben says:

    I left the tourney… updates?

lol. Good job! It’s pretty easy to confuse bentley mb for bellarmine ph. Both teams look almost identical…

  • Miles says:

There’s some rumor going around that the team of Kate Drew and Carey Appeldorn from Bishop O’ Dowd won the state tournament in grand style. Who knows; it’s probably unfounded… :)

  • o'dowd debate says:

Bishop O’Dowd AD defeated Granite Bay ON in the final round on a 5 – 2 ballot. The GGSA did well at this tournament. Big congrats to Kate and Carey.

  • Rohit Unni says:

Wow. Congrats to Bishop AD again for being absolutely amazing. I hope you guys are seniors so we don’t have to worry about you next year ;)

  • Rohit Unni says:

And I guess this breaks CFL’s record of making it to at least finals for like 6 years.

  • Congrats to Kate and Carey they are absolutely amazing. I really hope they continue in college. Does anyone know what college Kate and Carey are going to and if they are planning on doing college debate there?

Once again Great Job. I they’ve had an amazing season of debate that should be hard to top

  • POI says:

    Resolutions:
    1. THBT the current level of deficit spending does more harm than good.
    2. TBHT corporations should not be allowed to give donations to political campaigns.
    3. THBT, when in conflict, parental rights outweigh the benefits of academic freedom.
    4. US nuclear arms reductions decrease the risk of war.

Can anyone elaborate on how Granite Bay got to finals but not to semifinals?

  • Iain Lampert says:

Man. What a tourney. Bishop and Granite…incredible, guys.

  • Patrick Lin says:

I don’t understand that bracket at all… did they randomly redraw the pairings?

  • Logan Brog says:

Kate and Carey, congratulations on a win well deserved. We couldn’t be happier for you and are so pleased that GGSA has finally taken home the number one position. A job well done!

Sam and Natasha, we were sorry to see you go so early. That was really an upset and we all know that you deserve to have gone further. Next year.

To all of the great teams at States, congratulations for making it that far and I hope we’ll all be back next year.

  • o'dowd debate says:

McKenna & Brog are an amazing team. They defeated us 3 – 0 in round five of the tournament and we were looking forward to the possibility of facing them again in an all GGSA final while also fearing this possibility at the same time. Not only are they tremendous debaters, but they’re exceptional individuals as well.

  • Rohit Unni says:

I suppose this should confirm the Norcal Socal debate that was going on before the tournament

  • Patrick Lin says:

“Instead, both finalists … represented the better half of California.”

Whoever wrote this was clearly a Northern Californian :P

  • Content User says:

LOL, why was there ever a discrepancy about norcal being better than socal? No one should be surprised that norcal won, O’Dowd is amazing

  • Jackie says:

what college are the odowd kids going to

  • Iain Lampert says:

Carey’s going to UCLA. Kate’s undecided as of yesterday.

  • Pineapple says:

They probably won because carey appledorn looks just like the poi man.

  • Content User says:

No, it looks more like Iain

  • Aditya says:

Rumor has it that the original POI man was supposed to represent Artem, but I’d have to agree that it looks more like Iain than anyone else.

Congrats to Kate and Carey! What a dominating season; perfect to be capped off with a well deserved state championship.

  • Iain Lampert says:

    I have more of a beatles-cut than POI Guy, don’t I?

  • POI man looks just like Carey. Does UCLA have a debate team?

  • kates undecided between what colleges?

  • Jason says:

John Wooden would be jealous of Carey and Kate’s dominance.

  • windwardDebate says:

    UCLA has a parli team.

  • curious says:

how do this year’s champs compare to last year’s?

  • The Boss says:

WHat college is kate drew going to?
