View full results for California Cup 2009-2010
After five intense rounds, some Indian food for lunch, and some Chinese food for dinner, the First Annual California Cup broke to a Final round for the top two seeds and a Runoff round between third and fourth seed for third place.
In the Final Round, the panel of judges voted 3-1 in favor of Carey Appeldorn and Kate Drew from Bishop O’Dowd on the Opposition [Rector, Furer, A. Smith, Maine*], as did the floor vote on a 4-3 decision [Lampert, Maldi, Gardner*, Menon, Venkataramana*, Raskin, Lin*]. Niraj Asthana and Ben Mabie of James Logan, despite losing the championship round, were first seed and won second and first speaker awards respectively.
In the runoff round, the judges voted unanimously for Vrinda Agarwal and Justin Lin from Mira Loma over Annie McKenna and Logan Brog from Bentley.
Following a vote by the competitors, Harrison Noah was presented the most preferred critic award.
Congratulations to all participants for qualifying to the 1st Annual California Cup, and we hope that everyone had a great time with top notch rounds!

Congrats to Bishop O Dowd. The tournament was great, and I had a lot of fun watching rounds
My condolences to Kate Epstein – she was the only non-breaking 7-3 AND she missed the third speaker award (only the top 3 got trophies) on a tiebreaker. I’ve had a privilege of judging her in one of the prelims, and she is hands-down amazing.
Also, congrats to Kate and Carey on a fantastic performance in finals.
Okay I’m too tired to monitor all the comments right now, so if anyone makes an offensive comment or pretends to be someone else, I’ll just ban them.

Great tourney–cheers to Artem.
Special thanks to Carl and Pargat for being particularly pleasant guys.
Also, to Bishop’s Kate for delivering the best single high school parli speech I’ve ever seen.
Huge thanks to Patrick for managing the videotaping process. The first round – finals – is up: http://vimeo.com/10666049
I got the finals video up four hours after the end of the tournament. I am just that awesome xD
Runoff round is also up: http://vimeo.com/10666417
The rest will come slowly; I rushed these two out because, well, they were the outrounds
Good job to everyone there. I know me/Belinda at least had some pretty legit debates!
As Ryan cut the Lynbrook thank-yous short, thank you to all the Lynbrook volunteers for managing food, helping the tournament run smoothly, and filming some of the rounds.
Since most of the top teams here also made it to states, it should make for an interesting state tournament as well
Congrats to everybody, but especially to all the outstanding GGSA parli debaters!
Honestly… why did you drop out Jason
BTW… Best tourney of the year.. great job Andrew
i WATCHED the VIDEO online:
Great Round but Really? Exploitation of illegal immigrants makes us pay less for food? Also, double jeopardy etc. are all granted under litigants. But as for funding, both Niraj and Ben really brushed that aside.
In case y’all haven’t noticed yet, I’ve uploaded three more prelim rounds. Vimeo has a limit on how much video you can upload per week, and I’ve maxed it out, but this gives me time to collect videos from other cameramen.

I was looking though my chat history and I found this:
“me: I was thinking
about starting a round robin based on POI rankings
Jason: where
me: like top 16
but
it’s pretty hard to start a tourney
so I’m still in early planning stages
Jason: where would u have it? in ur dorm room?
me: no dude
Jason: in the POI command center”
-dated 11/01/09, first mention of the Cup
Congrats to my old partner Harrison Noah on being the best critic.
