Kate Drew, Carey Appeldorn, Jason Alafgani, Brian Qiu
After three days of intense debate, only two teams were left standing out of the 55 teams that entered the varsity parliamentary debate division of the Dempsey Cronin Invitational – Jason Alafgani and Brian Qiu from Lowell and Carey Appeldorn and Kate Drew from Bishop O’Dowd.
In the final round, Jason and Brian on the Government supported the resolution that current marijuana laws are jusified, narrowing the debate to the Netherlands. The panel of judges unanimously ruled that Carey and Kate successfully casted doubt on the validity of marijuana laws in the Netherlands by questioning their effectiveness and implementation.
Meanwhile, Rylan Schaeffer of MVLA picked up another top speaker award.
Bishop O’Dowd is coached by Jon Thorpe, while Terrence Abad coaches Lowell.
In the final round of novice parli, judges Raskin, Hayes, and Rector agreed that while Leland’s Bang Nguyen and Young Wu were correct in arguing that obesity is a problem in the US, Patty Long and Susan Shen of Mira Loma disproved the resolution by claiming that the US Federal Government does not believe this to be true.
In addition to placing second in the tournament, Bang was also the top novice speaker.
The Mira Loma team is led by Neil Forester and Brooke Bingaman; Leland is coached by Gay Brasher and Chris Barros.
Congratulations to all debaters!

What’s up with the three-person Lowell team?
Only LD is flighted.
Rd 1:
THBT change for change’s sake is often necessary.
The USFG should keep the troop levels in Iraq the same for the near future.
THBT there should be a second bailout. (wording?)
Rd 2:
Chess is better than poker.
THB in Christmas.
The USFG should pass a policy that is favorable to veterans. (wording?)
the field report is missing Pinewood teams
THB we need another bailout i think. and also, the resolutions here are really random. I ended up literally debating about chess and poker, it seems really random.
Round 3 Topics:
1.THB that this city was built on rock and roll.
2.THS make education free.
3.THB that war is not the answer.
Round 4 Topics:
1.THB [something about free higher education. very similar to r3:2.]
2.?will be updated soon
3.THB that the grass is greener on the other side.
^topic 2: thb that we are an immigrant nation. *funny story: one team defined th as the ppl in this room. Lol. Round 5: 1. Ths make healthcare free for everyone. 2. Why are we so blind to see that what we do hurts you and me. 3. Thb that more economic sanctions are preferable.
Haha that reminds me of last year’s SCU on the resolution that was like “All you need is love”, and our opponents began their speech by singing a little bit
Apparently Mountain View SS is 5-0 so far?
Yes MVSS is 5-0. and how are other teams doing (record wise)?
@Jason: What is up with that 3-person Lowell team?
I’m not at the tournament so I’m just hearing/seeing these things through the grapevine
The SCU tab asked me to not disclose other team’s records, so I’ll only post what I would have known had I not seen the results.
James Logan CN is 4-1, lost to MVLA SS in round 5.
Lynbrook SS was 3-1 going into round 5.
Lynbrook JL was 2-2 going into round 5.
The Pinewood teams that are missing from the above field report are Pinewood BD, TD, PL, LP (in varsity) and Pinewood QJ (in novice).

Novices semis resolutions:
In this instance, gender discrimination is necessary. (used by Leland/Notre Dame)
The US Federal Government should enact term limits on Supreme Court justices. (used by Mira Loma/James Logan)
This House believes in internet “net neutrality.”
Novice finals resolutions
This House believes that we have an obesity problem. (used by Mira Loma/Leland).
The US Federal Government should enact a more forward thinking.
This House would abolish it.
The Supreme Court resolution is horrible because USFG can’t legally change the Constitution, which sets out the no term limits rule for justices. The obesity resolution was funny because the judge (not me) came in with a huge sandwich and was eating it during the round.
In varsity finals, BOD beat Lowell on a 3-0. Congratulations to all debaters, and I’ll have the formal post up by tomorrow morning.
#4 novice speaker Lawrence Chen is from Lowell HS.
Thanks Aditya. I need to meet all the poi ppl. I met artem last night woooo.
Full results have been posted (see link on the top of the page).
We will post the prelims packet soon.
