Bishop O’Dowd announces the first annual Vendlinski Invitational

O’Dowd Debate cordially requests your presence on April 23, 2011 at the Vendlinski Invitational at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California.

The tournament will bring together 32 brilliant parliamentary debaters to compete in a novel format.

Teams will be selected by lottery before each of the four preliminary rounds. Debaters from the same school will not be paired. For example, the first round could be Vastola (O’Dowd) & Mabie (James Logan) against Morris (Mira Loma) & Wong (Granite Bay).

The tournament will break to blind winner and loser brackets for the elimination rounds. Teams will be redrawn before each elimination round from debaters within the bracket.

The winning team will receive large trophies.

Resolutions will not be serious (except for one round) and may cover zombies, alien invasion, and lycanthropy.

For many of the invitees, this tournament may mark their final rounds of high school parliamentary debate. This tournament offers the opportunity to work across the aisle and gain insight into what makes your opponents tick.

    Oh lawds.

“The winning team will receive large trophies.”

    Awesome.

  • Rohit Unni says:

These topics sound awesome xD. Shame I can’t go :-/

  • Jason Fauss says:

Probably just about the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard of

  • Luke says:

I’m glad I didn’t send out invites for a massive house party…I might have to cancel. This takes precedence.

    A few questions:
    1. How many people will elims break to? Does “winner and loser bracket” mean that there’ll be two separate brackets?
    2. If any of these thirty-two people can’t make it, will there be a way for people to potentially apply at-large, or will there just be a smaller pool?
    3. What criteria determines a “qualified judge”? Debater’s discretion?

Thanks for putting this on. This’ll be spectacular.

    bouta be dope

  • Corax says:

Is it just me or does this tournament sound a bit…dumb? As much as I am a fan of fun debate, how exactly does one present warrants on “alien invasion” or werewolves? What literature source do you reference? Are we talking Romero zombies, or the new school 28 days later zombies? Plus why are we randomly mixing and matching debaters—a huge part of debate is school prestige and pride, as well as learning to work smoothly with your partner. I’m all for an elite invite, but the structure of it just seems…silly. Especially with the TOC and state both coming up.

  • Jason Fauss says:

This is like an ‘end of the year party’. Would you rather debate deficit spending or Harry Potter? Cleary HP. Debate is fun, and those topic areas are even more fun. And the mixing the partners aspect is my favorite because why wouldn’t you want to debate with someone from another team? Jonathan is totally bored of me (not really) and how awesome would it be to have two different debating styles per team. If Fauss-Lindenbusch hit up Reynes-Mecklai you have 4 different schools, 4 different styles, 4 completely different ranges of knowledge and debate theory. Have fun debating with new people and new topics!

  • Benjamin Morris says:

Corax: Like all things in Parli, the type of zombies would clearly be up for debate.

This is an example of an awesome debate with similarly…strange…topics: http://www.parlidebate.com/recordings.php?id=244

  • Daley says:

The government team is responsible for outlining that all as it usually is. It will be silly yes, but it will also require an immense amount of creativity which deserves a competition in and of itself.

  • Rohit Unni says:

Bem, that round is made of awesome xD Bears dont fuck around!

  • Guest says:

    @corax someone didnt get invited

  • Adam A. says:

  • Luke Lindenbusch says:

Hey O’Dowd folks, what is the field looking like for next Saturday?
