Bentley closes out the Fifth International Tournament of Champions
As we have previously said, the Lynbrook Novite is going to be the last tournament covered by POI this season.

The Bentley Seniors, with the iTOC champs in the bottom right.
That was a blatant lie. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the new international champions, Erica Furer, Annie McKenna and Logan Brog of Bentley School. Special congratulations go to Annie McKenna for claiming the top speaker award. Annie, Erica and Logan are coached by Bruce Jordan (pictured above, bottom left). This year’s iTOC attracted debaters from Oregon, Washington, Texas, Utah, California and the Philippines.
Full results can be found here.
To repeat the previous post, we will be temporarily inactive over the summer. However, while we while won’t be posting debate news, we will be working on the technical aspect of the website. We will add a new forum, update the site design, expand the resource section, add results, and more.
Enjoy your vacation and come back next fall for more tournament news!

WOW, a parli TOC. Where did this come from? I do parli a lot in CA but I’ve never heard of this? Also how many teams were there and was this a hard tournament?
How do you qualify ? Does this mean more than winning state?
Hey
I have been accepted to this year’s tourney, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to go due to transportation/price issues, so all my info would be purely second-hand.
I don’t have full results for the tourney, just elims, but the ones I do have are posted here: http://www.pointofinformation.org/files/results/champ/idea-tournament-of-champions-willamette/
In case you are wondering, the two West Point Grey Academy teams that are shown to be in the 2008 elims were Canadian national champions in 2008 and then 2009. Logan Brog, who won this year, also won Stanford and Pepperdine.
Based off what I heard, the field isn’t big (around 15-30 teams), but is very tough. There are also a lot of debaters from outside of California or even the U.S., and a lot of debaters from other events, so you will face a lot of styles you are not familiar with. More importantly, iTOC is reputed to have very good judging, comprised of college debaters and debate coaches.
You can access the 2009 invite here: http://www.willamette.edu/cla/debate/events/itoc2009/
POI will post the 2010 invitation and news as they come along next year.
There is no formal qualification procedure, the tournament director just looks at your overall record at previous tournaments. If you generally have winning records, you should probably qual.
In terms of reputation, I’d say CHSSA State is probably harder to win, but iTOC would be more prestigious to people outside of Cali. E.g. my camp friend, who was from Canada, was familiar with iTOC, but could care less about a state tourney. I’d assume college admissions would think likewise
.
This is really interesting, because i have beat bot h of the co-champions in parli debate before, but i have never heard of this tournament. I hope the advertising next year is better. This looks really good for college admissions.
haha, I beat the state champions and the stanford champions last year w/o winning anything big myself, but you’re right, iTOC has a pretty nice “field strength” to “ability of impressing colleges” ratio, so if you can beat the bentley kids (who are pretty good in my opinion), you might be in luck.
however, it does look like the previous years were more competitive, so next year it might get harder again.
yah, the bentley kids were pretty good but not like amazing i’d consider them above average. It really does suck though, i beat the state champions, both iTOC champions and still no big title for myself. I hope next year i will.
woah you beat the state champs?
last years? (taman narayan / ryan kuo)
because those guys are pretty awesome
what school do you go to?
no this year.
this is obviously a pseudonym haha. my friend from another school linked me to this website a week ago and i started looking.
and no, it was this year’s lynbrook team
well congrats on that haha
if you could spread this website to your parli friends at your school and around the area that’d be great! thanks!
