This is the first draft of the calendar, and it will be updated throughout the season. Only Invitationals, State Qualifiers, State, and Championship tournaments will be posted on the calendar.

You will note that the long-running Northern California Debate Round Robin held annually by Jesuit High School will be adding Parliamentary and Public Forum Debate to its events offered. In prior years, the tournament ran two divisions of Policy Debate, with 6 preliminary rounds and a break to quarter-finals.

The Jesuit Tournament’s addition of Parliamentary Debate is one of many tournaments that have recently added the event in some form. Yale recently added a division of Parliamentary Debate to its prestigious high school tournament, and other tournaments nationwide have adopted variants on NFL Supplemental Debate.

Currently, we are missing information about the following tournaments:

Silverton Novite, Lancer @ Carlsbad, Whitman, Patriot @ Liberty, Redmond, Santa Clara Spring, California Cup, iTOC @ Willamette, Oregon State Tournament

Parliamentary Debate Summer Camp: 4 of the greatest words to grace the English language.

Many of California’s top Parliamentary debaters are currently at the Stanford National Forensics Institute, learning all about the joys of Parliamentary Debate.

UPDATE: Working as the “Eye” of POI is Jeff Leibenhaut, who brings you this review:

After debating for just a year, I was excited to go to debate camp in order to reach a more advanced level in parliamentary debate. SNFI turned out to be just what I was looking for, as it helped me improve through lectures, labs, and practice rounds.
Campers started practicing the first day, as a jargon quiz was given after a presentation on argumentation. Campers were then sorted into labs (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) based on the results of the jargon quiz. An average day at SNFI had three lectures, two labs, and three practice rounds. Lectures were offered at both an intermediate level and an advanced level, they were : Art of Argumentation, Topic Analysis, Anatomy of a Debate Round, Research & Writing Briefs, Proposition Case Construction, Proposition Strategy, Standards and Weighing, Topicality, Disads, Counterplans, Terrorism/Religion, Economics, Hegemony, Supreme Court Cases, Oil, Kritiks, POIs, Judge Adaption, Delivery, and Psychology of Winning. The labs were headed by Kate Falkenstein (beginner), Matt Vassar (intermediate), and Nick Robinson (advanced); instructors would elaborate on the lectures to their labs based on the experience level of the students.
The lectures and labs explained both common and uncommon aspects of parliamentary debate. Examples were the explanation of how to run good extra-T and effects-T shells, along with regular T shells. The balance was very helpful, as it preps debaters for out-rounds and allows for a more varied neg approach. It should be noted that the SNFI strategies were far more applicable to policy rounds than value rounds, but this is in no way a problem as students learned how to adapt resolutions to policy rounds and the advantages of doing so. This camp is recommended for debaters of all levels, especially for those that love debating policy resolutions!

The Oregon Debate Institute parli camp for 2010 has just ended. Over two weeks, 26 campers attended lectures and lab sessions, and competed in two camp tournaments. This year, there was an especially diverse group of campers, with people from Nevada, New Jersey, Canada, and even Australia. Alice Lin, who attended ODI for the second time this year, brings you this account.

I’d been somewhat worried that I wouldn’t learn as much this year because I’d already gone to ODI once before, but I was most definitely wrong. This year, there was a stronger focus on strategy and the meta-debate. There were more (but shorter) issue lectures, with a focus less on the history of a region and more on the application of the issue in debate rounds. In each lecture, we would talk about possible plan texts or counterplans, link stories, impacts, and critiques that could be drawn from the subject area. We came to expect the negative to run something besides straight-up disads, such as a PIC or a K. In the final round of the first camp tourney, the negative ran some politics disadvantages and a process CP saying that we should pass the plan through Congress, have Obama veto it, and have Congress overturn the veto. The affirmative won on a procedural against process CPs.

Compared to last year, we greater exposure to critical arguments. Each issue lecture would include some discussion of some critical perspectives on the issues, whether it be Said on Orientalism, Wallerstein on worlds-system theory, Chiappa on nuclearism, or Spanos on technocratic thought. My partner Betty and I ourselves ran four critiques during the two camp tournaments, one of which I wrote myself (you can guess which one it is by our team name below). For the advanced lab, which I was in, we were required to all write at least one critical argument in the two briefs we had to churn out during camp.

In between lectures, practice rounds, working on briefs, and going out to Market of Choice or Prince Puckler’s (ice cream), we all found some time to hang out. Whether it be capture the flag or ultimate frisbee, ping-pong or Chat Roulette, the Hangover or Gaytown, disorganized curfew protests or getting locked out while watching the meteor shower, we had good times. A huge thanks to everyone at ODI for an awesome two weeks!

Global Debate and iDebate reported:

“On May 22 and 23, excellent teams from Canada, the Philippines and several states within the US gathered on the campus of Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, for the 6th annual International Tournament of Champions. The three-person teams debated, in the World Schools format, the topic, “In some cases, juveniles should be tried as adults.”
Competition was fierce during the day, but in the evenings students gathered for impromtu talent contests, games on the Wii, foosball, air hockey and movies.

“WOW! We had an amazing time,” said parent Karima Kassam. “Our son Armaan is actively involved with debate and we have gone as far as the Czech Republic to debate. Truly, the organization, the atmosphere, the comradery, and yes of course the FOOD exceeded our expectations.”

Here are the results:

1st Christina Yu, Armaan Kassam and Annie Jin of Team Burnaby, Burnaby, British Columbia

2nd Annie McKenna and Logan Brog of Bentley School, Lafayette, California

3rd Karl G. Maeser Preparatory Academy

4th Ashley Bowron, Trevor Davis and Liam Carson of West Point Grey Academy, Vancouver, British Columbia

The International Tournament of Champions is known for its more relaxed, fun, intimate atmosphere. Students stay on-campus in dorm rooms, getting a taste for campus life while making friends with students from different corners of the globe.

Registration for the 2011 tournament will begin in January 2011.”

This is Artem speaking. I was asked by Matt Vassar, who used to direct NPDL and is currently a professor at Stanford, to publish the following email he sent out to CFL coaches. A couple things that I want to add to the email are that 1) Matt neglects to mention that he also coached an MLK-Logan closeout and 2) as an SNFI alumni, I would definitely recommend everyone to check out the camp. Anywho, here’s what Matt has to say:

“Friends,

I hope that all is well in the Coast Forensic League; coaches who were around several years ago will remember my name, and to those who don’t know me, it’s a pleasure to meet you!

My name is Matt Vassar and I’m on faculty at Stanford University in the Oral Communication Program. As a coach in the Coast Forensic League, I trained parliamentary debate competitors to international accolades at the International Tournament of Champions (where only 72 teams worldwide were invited) and the North American Debating Championships (where only 24 teams in North America were invited); I had top-ranked speakers (finishing as high as 2nd place) as well as teams in the semi-final round at each of these tournaments.

For the past four years, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of serving as director of the parliamentary division at the Stanford National Forensic Institute. Regardless of if you have students who are just starting out or parliamentary debate students are ready to take their debating to the next level through top-ranked instruction, I would highly recommend the Stanford National Forensic Institute’s program in parliamentary debate.

I hope to see many of your students at camp this summer!

Matt”
